Many health nuts consider almonds to be the healthiest of nuts - they say a handful a day keeps the Doctor away (not to mention tastes darn good when the hunger pangs hit). We believe them. Go ahead and see for yourself. The almond, Prunus dulcis, is a medium sized tree of the rose family - closely related to the peach, apricot, and plum. The almond fruit consists of the edible inner seed or kernel, the shell, and the outer hull. The hull splits open at maturity. When dry, it may be easily separated from the shell. Unlike its relative, the peach, where the flesh of the peach is eaten and the pit thrown away, the almond pit containing the edible seed or nut is kept and the thin fibrous outer flesh (the hull) is thrown away. Almond trees, like other fruit crops, are grown in groves. The origins of the almond are obscure but it is believed to have originated in western Asia, gradually spreading west to the dry regions of the Mediterranean basin. In the 1850s, plantings were made in select areas of north-central California - areas with ideal conditions for the almond plants growth. Today ninety-nine percent of the almonds grown in the United States come from a 400-mile long stretch of land in California extending north from Bakersfield to Red Bluff. The most important variety of almonds is the Nonpareil, which makes up over fifty percent of total almond production. BEER NUTS Brand Snacks uses California Nonpareils, exclusively for their excellent taste and shape. Ingredients: Almonds, Vegetable Oil (Peanut and/or Coconut), Corn Syrup and Salt.
